Summer-Winter Album 3 - HEART OF A STARLING

Summer-Winter started as a musical/artistic project several years ago in a winter basement of a dwelling along the river of a cloud-filled, ruined post-industrial city (Pittsburgh) with beautiful landscape and an unbelievable array of low-lighted old man taverns.

The music of Summer-Winter is mostly downtempo and mellow, with a melancholy feel. This album tries to make sense of the cultural mechanization and reduction of a non-linear, contradictory, experiential body, and the contrasting image that slowly emerged was that of a starling, its heart wildly beating against dark, distant trees .

The personnel of this “band” often changes, as Terry O’Hara continues to write the music and bring in excellent musicians to flesh out the songs.

We recorded this album for the most part at J Bird Studio, in Zelienople, Pa (and to a small degree Mr. Smalls, In Pittsburgh, Pa with Larry Luther) and J Vega worked as an engineer and producer.

PRESS * Summer-Winter

Americana UK: Summer-Winter, seeming the project of one Terry O’Hara, have fashioned a record of mesmerizing depth, beauty and articulation...O’Hara is able to channel both the slow burning bedsit angst of early Red House Painters and the elegiac, soaring sadness of their later material. www.americana-uk.com/index.php/cdreviews/item/summer-winter-alone-is-yes-yellow-bird-2009

National Public Radio (NPR): Terry O’Hara has a voice that has some of the faltering facets of Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne, while at times channeling the intimacy of the late Mark Linkous (Sparklehorse)...Alone is Yes floats through ten lovely folk songs that sound like they were recorded in a spaceship.

Speed of Pittsburgh Sound: Alone is Yes is more than a good folk record, it’s a devastating one. Terry O’Hara has brought together a small symphony of collaborators to create an elegiac, beautiful, singular sound.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: The gorgeous debut album from the Pittsburgh project Summer-Winter is indeed suited for solitude, coming on like a narcotic.

The Globe: The album has a soothing, spacey sound, similar to a sedated Radiohead. Constant echoes and disjointed melodies laden with loaded pauses lull the listener into a calm, yet melancholy, stupor.

The Wounded Jukebox: ...beautiful stages for sound are set on each song...there isn’t another record (Bewildered) I’d rather have with me on a drive through the Fall suffering back roads...

Draw Us Lines: Summer-Winter is Terry O’Hara and his beautiful, haunting folk songs.

Shh-Listen: The music is mature, nuanced, and beautiful...Bewildered is an album that carries a world of experience, and a lifetime of raw living, in its clutches.

Pittsburgh City Paper: Terry O’Hara pops up every couple of years to drop a beautiful, understated alt-folk album, then disappears again...the result is hypnotic and resigned.

Record Department: Terry O’Hara, a.k.a. Summer-Winter, follows up his debut Alone is Yes with the lovely atmospheric folk album, Bewildered...O’Hara’s simple, lovely lyrics and understated vocals are truly the focal point.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: The local singer-songwriter...seems to reside in his own universe where everything seems to spin slowly and hazy, letting the listener wallow in the beauty.

WYEP: The second album from Pittsburgh singer-songwriter Terry O’Hara (who goes under the moniker of Summer-Winter) is suitable for gazing out the window at a snowy winter scene. If you like Grandaddy, Sparklehorse or even Kurt Vile, you’ll appreciate his spacey mode of indie pop.
